Liverpool Cycling 1887 – Walter Dutton p11.

Round the Mersey Tour: 30th April & 1st May 1887

On this first day the Duttons started by crossing the Mersey by ferry to Birkenhead. They joined friends, including members of the Wirral Bicycle Club, and together  rode down the Wirral peninsula to Chester for an overnight stay in lodging.  On the Sunday they returned home from Chester via Kelsall, Delamere Forest and Acton Bridge. At Kelsall there is a narrow lane named the ‘Old Coach Road’ which Walt and his pals probably followed.  Among modern ‘ribbon’ development, terraced houses of that era are still to be seen.  Our friends possibly dropped into the Vale Royal Abbey Arms in Delamere Forest for  a quenching of thirsts.
