Dr Janet Atherton OBE (former CTC/Cycling U.K. Club member and Chair of the Cycling U.K. Board of Trustees sadly passed away recently and her family have organised an occasion in which her many friends in cycling may come together to celebrate her life and times.. This will be held at :-
Hulme Hall, Port Sunlight, Wirral. Monday 2nd June 2025 at 11.30hrs.
Janet had a career in Public Health. Amongst her positions she was a local Director of Public Health since 1998, first in Wirral and then Sefton in Merseyside. She has also been Acting Chief Executive for NHS Sefton for nine months prior to the establishment of the NHS Merseyside Cluster when she returned to her public health role. Janet trained in medicine and public health in the North East before making the move to the North West in 1994.
Her commitment to tackling Health Inequalities was recognised in a NHS North West Leadership Academy Award in 2008. She has a long standing special interest in tobacco control and was responsible for setting up the successful Smokefree North West programme (now Tobacco Free Futures). In addition, her sense of dedication led her into the Association of Directors of Public Health where she held a three year post as President.
It is fitting, and consistent with her life’s trajectory that Janet should have been drawn to cycling for her retirement years becoming an active member of the charity CyclingUK. Prior to retirement on health grounds she was an active club member, and later and more latterly, Chair of CyclingUK’s Board of Trustees.
